Potokaki beach: Samos’ longest shoreline
Potokaki beach in Pythagorio is the longest beach on Samos Island, stretching over 3.8 km. It is a Blue Flag awarded destination, ensuring top-tier water quality and excellent facilities.
While the name “Potokaki” usually refers to the organized section near the airport, the beach continues uninterrupted all the way to the Temple of Hera.
The shoreline is a mix of small and medium pebbles with sandy sections. The Eastern part is lively and developed, surrounded by hotels and homes, while the Western part offers a more natural, serene landscape. A unique feature of the beach is the Samos airport runway. Located at the centre of the beach, it offers a spectacular plane-spotting experience for visitors.
Tips for visitors
- Choose your vibe
Swim in front of the settlement for full amenities and beach bars, or head west for total isolation and untouched nature. - Wind & Sea
On days with northerly winds, the breeze usually blows from the land (offshore), keeping the water calm and flat. The sea floor has a smooth, gradual depth, making it excellent for families and long-distance swimming. - Family-Friendly
With its vast length and calm waters, large sections of the beach are perfect for children to play safely. - Coastal hike to the Temple of Hera
You can walk along the shore from Potokaki beach in Pythagorio to the Temple of Hera. In antiquity, the ancient city (modern-day Pythagorio) was connected to the Temple via the Iera Odos (Sacred Way), which followed roughly the same coastal direction as the beach today.
