The Cave of Pythagoras – One of Samos’ Most Legendary Landmarks.
Hidden on the southern slopes of Mount Kerki, near Marathokampos, the Cave of Pythagoras is one of the most remarkable historical and natural attractions in Samos.
Built into the mountainside at an altitude of approximately 350 metres, this secluded site offers breathtaking views over the Aegean Sea, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, pine forests and unspoiled landscapes.
According to local tradition, the famous philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, who was born on Samos in the 6th century BC, used this place as a retreat for study, meditation and contemplation.
Although many legends describe it as his hiding place during political persecution, historians believe it was more likely a peaceful refuge where he devoted himself to philosophy and mathematics.
The Caves:
The site includes two neighbouring caves. According to local tradition, Pythagoras lived in one of them while using the other as a place for study and teaching.
From the parking area, a mountain path leads to a fork. The left path climbs approximately 40 stone steps to the cave-chapel of Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa.
Here visitors can admire its peaceful atmosphere, the remains of Byzantine frescoes and breathtaking panoramic views over the Aegean Sea and the southwest coast of Samos.
Following the right path, you first reach the small chapel dedicated to Saint John.
A short climb over an easy three-metre rock then brings you to the upper Cave of Pythagoras, where a natural water basin, formed by dripping stalactites, can still be seen.
Beyond this point lies a deep abyss that is not accessible to visitors.
This cave also rewards visitors with spectacular panoramic views of Mount Kerki, the Aegean Sea and the surrounding coastline.
The Cave of Pythagoras combines history, nature and unforgettable scenery in one unique destination. With panoramic viewpoints from both the Cave of Pythagoras and the cave-chapel of Panagia Sarantaskaliotissa, it is an unforgettable stop for hikers, photographers, history enthusiasts and anyone wishing to discover one of the most legendary places in Samos.
