Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis: Samos’ revolutionary fortress.

The Tower of Lykourgos Logothetis is the ultimate symbol of Samos’ fight for freedom.
Built in 1824 by the leader of the Samian Revolution, it is located at the top of the ancient acropolis of Pythagorio, blending 10th-century Byzantine foundations with 19th-century defensive architecture.

Today, this restored stone tower serves as a museum, bridging the gap between antiquity and the Modern Greek state.

What to see:

  • Permanent exhibition: Six sections covering history from the late Hellenistic period to the 19th century.
  • Byzantine treasures: Rare coins, lead seals, and pottery found within the castle and surrounding ruins.
  • Digital exhibits: Audiovisual displays and maps showcasing the castle’s history and the life of Lykourgos Logothetis.
  • Architecture: Trace the building’s phases, from the era of Emperor Nikephoros Phokas (10th c.) to the Genoese fortifications (14th c.).

Visitor tips:

  • Sunset spot: This is the best place in Pythagorio for sunset. Watch the sun dip behind the Heraion Gulf with views of the Turkish coast.
  • Photography: The elevated position offers a stunning panorama of the harbor and the Aegean Sea.
  • The Church: Don’t miss the beautiful Church of the Transfiguration right next door, built to celebrate the 1824 victory.
