The Karlovasi Tannery Museum, the only one of its kind in Greece, is located in a historic tannery in the Tabakika district of Neo Karlovasi.
Tanning was a vital industry in Samos, reaching its peak in Karlovasi during the late 19th century.
It played a crucial role in the city’s economic growth, from the era of the Samian Hegemony until World War II.
Thanks to Samos’ special trade privileges before its union with Greece, locally leather produced hides were exported worldwide. However, with the rise of the industrial revolution, traditional tanneries struggled to compete with large-scale factories, leading to their decline by the 1930s.
The Tannery Museum offers a fascinating look into this once thriving industry. Through rich photographic archives and detailed exhibits, visitors can explore the tools, techniques, and methods used in leather processing. Samos, in particular, was renowned for its herbal tanning process, especially for sole leather production.
A highlight of the museum is a historical map showcasing the locations of tanneries across Karlovasi, during the 20th century, an insight into the once widespread presence of the industry on the island
