Vourliotes was founded around 1600 by settlers from Vourla in Asia Minor. Today, it remains one of the island’s oldest and most atmospheric mountain villages.

Begin your walk from the central square and continue through the narrow cobbled streets. Traditional houses, wooden balconies, colourful doors and flower-filled courtyards preserve the character of an old Samian settlement.

Life here moves at a gentle pace. Stop for a coffee in the square, explore the side streets and look for small architectural details that reveal the village’s history. Among the local landmarks are the Church of Agios Ioannis, the churches of Agia Pelagia and Agia Matrona, and the nearby Pnaka area with its plane trees and running waters.

Vineyards and Walking Trails.

The landscape around Vourliotes has been shaped by generations of vine growers. Muscat vines grow on traditional stone terraces, often on steep slopes where much of the work must still be done by hand.

Old paths cross the vineyards, forests and mountain landscape around the village. Routes connect Vourliotes with Vronta Monastery, Pnaka, Manolates and higher areas of Mount Karvounis.

Choose a route that matches your experience and physical condition. Wear sturdy shoes, carry enough water and avoid walking during the hottest hours of summer. Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant, although every season reveals a different side of the vineyard.

Visit  Vronta Monastery.

Vronta Monastery, also known as Panagia Vrontiani, stands in a peaceful mountain setting surrounded by vineyards and pine-covered slopes. Founded in 1566, it is generally considered the oldest monastery in Samos.

At the centre of the complex stands a domed basilica with a gilded, carved wooden iconostasis, historic icons and surviving frescoes. The monastery’s enclosed courtyard, arched walkways and monastic cells preserve the atmosphere of this important religious landmark.

The drive from Vourliotes takes approximately ten minutes and follows a mountain road through the vineyards. Opening hours may change, so visitors should always call before travelling to confirm that the monastery is open. Respectful clothing is required.

Where to Eat in Vourliotes.

After exploring the village, stop for a traditional meal at Pera Vrisi. The restaurant is located beside the historic stone fountain at the entrance to Vourliotes, from which it takes its name.

Under the shade of the plane trees, visitors can enjoy homemade dishes inspired by the Samian family table. The menu includes local specialities, grilled meats and seasonal salads.
Many of the vegetables and herbs are grown in the owners’ own garden.

For a truly local experience, ask about Gemisti Plati, a traditional Samian recipe made with stuffed goat back and available upon advance order.

Morning: Explore Pnaka Spring and the nearby chapels Saint Konstantinos and Saint Ioannis Prodromos.
